Unschooling in Our House

Many people ask me if you unschool does that mean you don't do any type of schooling. I explain my kids do learn but in a more relaxed and creative way. We don't follow any set curriculum but my daughter does have reading and math worksheets and my son does math worksheets. We watch educational dvd's and tv programs and movies. . We also take walks to our local park to explore and gather items for nature crafts. We go letterboxing, visit museums and zoo's.

Both my children have learning disabilities so sitting down and having reading and writing assignments doesn't work for them. They are both hands on type learners and visual learners as well.

We are very fortunate to live in Wisconsin which has easier homeschool laws compared to other states. We are required to teach 875hrs of progressive learning but we don't have to prove what we are teaching or take any state tests. But I am sure if I did live in a state with testing or more requirements it would be different for my kids since both my children are learning disabled.

Both of my kids also have autism spectrum disorders and seeing the world through their eyes is so interesting. They notice the little things others wouldn't stop to pay attention to - the way a branch is on a tree, color of the flowers, sound of the waves coming up onto the beach, clouds , and many many others.

When I went to school I hated it for a variety of reasons and I am happy that my kids don't have to deal with public schools. Which in our area do not have good programs for special needs children, especially the kids like mine that are not severly disabled. They are able to learn at their own speed and learn what they want to learn.
